Toyota has announced details of its new range-topping Celica coupe, which goes on sale on July 1.

The Celica GT will sit above the existing T Sport model in terms of equipment and specification and will cost nearly £1500 more, at £22,595.

The GT uses the same 1.8-litre VVT-i engine as the T Sport, delivering 189bhp. Top speed is 140mph, where legal, and it sprints from standstill to 62mph in 7.2sec.

Toyota has made several styling and kit changes to the GT, adding a complete bodykit, front air dam and large rear spoiler. The model also features GT-branded 17-inch alloy wheels and lowered suspension. Inside it has suede-effect upholstery, a special gear knob and an upgraded sound system with a six-CD autochanger.

Standard safety equipment carried over from the T Sport includes stability control, traction control and brake assist. The GT also has climate control, electric windows, electric heated door-mirrors, and an alarm.

The Celica remains one of What Car?’s favourite coupes, although at this price the GT faces stiff competition from rivals such as the Audi TT and Mazda RX-8, both of which have better predicted resale values. Based on existing Celica models, buyers should expect discounts of around £1500 on the GT once it has been in showrooms for a few weeks.

  • The GT is a swansong for the Celica which, along with the MR2 roadster and Previa MPV, will be dropped from Toyota’s line-up in 2006. The manufacturer says it wants to concentrate its efforts on mass-market models that are built in Europe.
