Avensis will get new diesels in 2005

Toyota’s Avensis family car will be offered with two powerful new diesel engines from summer 2005.

The new 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine, unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in September, will first appear in the Avensis offering 150bhp. Towards the end of 2005, a more powerful 180bhp version will be included.

Sister firm Lexus is also developing diesel engines, but these won’t appear until well into 2006. In the meantime, two petrol-electric hybrid Lexus cars will be launched – the RX400h 4x4, which goes on sale in summer 2005, and a hybrid version of the forthcoming GS executive which should arrive by spring 2006.
