Toyota’s new seven-seater Corolla Verso MPV will cost from £14,495 when it goes on sale on May 1.

Although entry-level models cost £1682 more than the two-year-old models they replace, the new Verso is equipped with a third row of fold-flat seats to cater for two extra passengers.

In all, two petrol and one diesel engine are on offer in a choice of three trim levels, with prices topping out at £19,795 for the 2.0-litre diesel in T Spirit specification.

Moving up from the 109bhp 1.6- to the 127bhp 1.8-litre petrol adds £500 to the price tag while the 114bhp diesel is another £1000. Upgrading from T2 to T3 trim costs £2000 while a top-of-the-range T Spirit is another £1800.

All cars have nine airbags as standard, including one to protect the driver’s legs, plus anti-lock brakes. T3 and T Spirit models add traction and stability control as well as brake assist for shorter stopping distances in an emergency.

Electric front windows, a CD stereo with steering wheel-mounted controls, air-conditioning and remote central locking are fitted to T2 versions, while T3 cars also have alloy wheels, electric mirrors, rear electric windows, cruise control, climate control and automatic wipers. T Spirit variants get a DVD entertainment system with head restraint-mounted screens.

Options include a five-speed sequential gearbox for the 1.8-litre at £500 and a £1350 satellite-navigation system which can also be matched to front- and rear-mounted cameras for £2300.
