We've already lifted the lid on the next Mercedes C-Class - now we've got a sneak preview of the next Audi A4.

The two giants of the compact executive market will both be replaced over the next two years, but the Audi will be the later of the two.

Mercedes is tipped to introduce the C-Class next year, but Audi won't launch its new A4 until 2008.

Our new computer-generated images give a good idea of what the Audi will look like, and even show it alongside its great rival.

The A4 is a well-established, key model for the manufacturer, but Audi is on the verge of a huge product expansion that will take into entirely new markets.

A sporty S3 addition to the A3 range is first later this year, which is rumoured to have an output of 270bhp.

Next year, the company will launch the A5 coupe that uses many parts from the forthcoming A4. We've already shown you what the Mercedes CLK rival will look in earlier stories - just follow the links on the right to take a look.

Also featured earlier on whatcar.com is a Q5 compact 4x4 to sit below the big Q7 off-roader and compete with the BMW X3.
