Bentley launches 190mph drop top

26 September 2005

• Bentley to launch Continental GT convertible late 2006
• Top speed will exceed 190mph
• Expect prices to start around £135k

Bentley's new Continental GTC

Premiership footballers will be spoilt for choice at the end of next year, when Bentley introduces a convertible version of its successful Continental GT coupe.

Called the Continental GTC, the drop-top uses a traditional fabric roof and is powered by the same 552bhp 6.0-litre engine as the coupe and four-door Flying Spur.

Bentley says the car has a top speed in excess of 190mph, but other performance figures are being kept under wraps until later in the year.

Inevitably, the convertible will be heavier than the coupe and a touch slower as a result. The enormous engine, with its unique W formation of 12-cylinders, will still give it a staggering turn of speed, so expect a 0-60mph time of no more than five seconds.

Prices should be announced later this year, but we'd expect to pay around £20,000 more than the coupe, meaning a list price around the £135,000 mark.

The GTC will become the company's second new convertible after the Arnage-based Azure, which goes on sale next spring with a price tag of at least £200,000.
