Diesel engine for Suzuki SX4

Suzuki has completed its new SX4 off-roader range with the addition of four-wheel drive and diesel versions.

The 119bhp 1.9-litre diesel model is priced from £12,799, and so is £1800 more than the 106bhp 1.6-litre petrol. A six-speed manual gearbox is fitted in place of the five-speed found on the petrol model.

Performance figures aren't significantly better than the petrol. A 0-62mph time of 10.6 seconds is only 0.2sec faster than the petrol, while combined fuel economy only improves 3.3mpg to 44.8mpg.

The 4Grip four-wheel drive model is available with the petrol engine in GLX trim for £12,999, £1150 more than the two-wheel drive car. In automatic mode the system sends power to the rear wheels only when the front two start to slip, but drivers can also select two other settings.

A full-time two-wheel drive is on hand if you want to save on fuel, while a four-wheel drive lock setting sends power to the rear wheels even when the front pair haven't lost tractions. This operates at speeds of up to 40mph when the Suzuki switches back to the automatic mode.

Compared with the two-wheel drive SX4, the 4Grip is 0.7sec slower to 62mph at 11.5sec, and 1.7mpg thirstier on the combined fuel consumption cycle at 39.8mpg.
