First look at updated Polo Dune

New 2005 Polo Dune

This is the first look at the updated Polo Dune faux-by-four which goes on sale in the UK next spring.

Although it has raised suspension and the chunky bodykit of an off-roader, the five-door only Dune retains the front-wheel-drive layout of the rest of the Polo supermini range.

Prices are expected to start at £12,645 for a 1.4-litre, 74bhp petrol – £1700 more than a similarly-powered SE supermini. A 1.4-litre, 69bhp diesel will also be available for about £13,500.

Features that set the Dune apart from the rest of the supermini range include large 17-inch alloy wheels, beefier-looking bumpers, sill and wheel arch mouldings and silver-coloured roof rails.

Internally, the car has the sports seats, aluminium-look pedals and chrome instruments surrounds of Sport-trimmed Polos, as well as an MP3-compatible CD player, air-conditioning and electric windows and mirrors.

A small off-roader from Volkswagen is on the way, but its launch has now been put back to 2007. Based on the Golf, and likely to rival the likes of next year's new Land Rover Freelander, the four-wheel-drive car will also feature raised suspension for light off-roading at best.

It's likely to cost from around £17,000 and is rumoured to be called Beduin or Marakesh.
