Mini has finally confirmed that a long-wheelbase estate version of the car will be built.

The company announced at the Detroit Motor Show that the Traveller concept cars seen at Frankfurt, Tokyo and the US over the last five months will be available to buy within three years.

Mini says it will be a modern reinterpretation of the Traveller and Clubman of the 1960s, and offer increased size and practicality over the standard model, which itself is replaced by a new car either this year or in 2007.

Mini hasn't decided on a final name for the new addition to the range, but promises it will retain the fun driving characteristics of the original, as well as present buyers with plenty of opportunity to spend lots of cash personalising their models.

The latest Concept Traveller at Detroit featured a roof rack for stowing snowboards and a side hatch containing gear for the slopes including goggles and sun cream.
