Lexus’s all-new IS diesel compact executive saloon will cost from £22,200, undercutting the IS250 petrol model by £200.

The IS is powered by a175bhp 2.2-litre engine, the first diesel Lexus has ever sold. It is available to order now, with first deliveries expected in January. The IS220d is only a little slower than the petrol IS, but far more fuel efficient and cheaper to tax as a company car.

Every model is fitted with front, side, curtain and knee airbags, stability and traction control and an alarm.

Climate control, a six-CD changer, cruise control, alloy wheels, remote central locking, keyless entry and engine start-up, electric windows and electrically folding and adjustable door mirrors are also standard.

Moving up to SE trim adds £3000 to the price, and brings 17-inch alloys and leather upholstery. The electrically adjustable front seats, with memory settings, can also be heated and cooled.

IS220d Sport models, with suede-effect interior, 18-inch alloy wheels and lowered suspension cost from £26,900. SE-L trim, costing £27,800, adds rain-sensing wipers, front and rear parking sensors, an electrically adjustable steering column, wood trim and an electrically operated sunblind for the rear windscreen.
