Monster Fiat goes… almost anywhere

02 December 2005

  • Fiat Oltre has three-tonne load capacity
  • Half-metre ground clearance and full-time 4WD
  • Capacity to climb 40-degree inclines

This seven-tonne off-road monster might look like a Hummer but is, in fact, a Fiat.

Called the Oltre, the big 4x4 show car is based on the FCLV military vehicle, which Fiat's commercial arm, Iveco, builds for the British Army.

It's longer than a Land Rover Discovery and also far taller, wider and heavier. With an overall payload of three tonnes, including up to five passengers, the Oltre has a total maximum weight of seven tonnes.

Figures demonstrating its off-road potential are similarly impressive. Full-time four-wheel drive, three locking differentials, and an enormous 50cm of ground clearance see to that.

The Oltre can clamber up almost 40 degree slopes, a gradient you'd have great difficulty clambering up on foot. A standard wading height of 85cm can be extended to 1.5 metres with snorkel-type air inlets and exhaust extensions.

A 185bhp 3.0-litre diesel engine can only haul the Oltre along at speeds of up to 80mph, so you'd need to plan your overtaking manoeuvres well in advance.

• While the Oltre will never be sold, Fiat is launching its new Sedici 4x4 in the UK next spring and is already reviewed on
