New Magentis sets sights on Passat

22 May 2006

Kia says it has big hitters such as the Volkswagen Passat and Ford Mondeo firmly in its sights with its new Magentis family car, which goes on sale next week.

The all-new car costs from £14,495 for the 142bhp 2.0-litre petrol version and £15,495 for the 138bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel, the first-ever diesel in the Magentis. The top-of-the-range 2.7-litre V6 petrol starts at £17,495.

The new family car is bigger than the outgoing model in every dimension. Kia says its extended wheelbase has created more room in the cabin and boot.

Specification levels are generous. All models have air-conditioning, front, side and curtain airbags, remote central locking and an MP3-compatible CD player.

Emergency brake assist, stability control and traction control are saved for LS models, which also have climate control and electrically adjustable front seats.

The 2.0-litre petrol is available with either a five-speed manual gearbox while the diesel uses a six-speed manual or four-speed auto gearbox. A four-speed automatic gearbox is standard on all LS-trimmed cars.

So, can the new car succeed in tackling the like of the Passat and Mondeo? Find out next week when we'll have a full review of the Magentis.
