New Vauxhall Corsa breaks cover

16 May 2006

This is Vauxhall's all-new Corsa supermini, which arrives in the UK this autumn.

Initially, it goes on sale alongside the current model, so entry-level prices are likely to start at around £7800.

The newcomer makes its world debut at the British Motor Show in London in July, and follows in the footsteps of the Astra by offering two models aimed at different buyers.

There's a conventional, roomy five-door version with flexible seating for small families, and a sporty coupe-styled three-door model designed to appeal to younger buyers.

At the moment, Vauxhall has only released pictures and details of the three-door version, but five-door cars will surface in the next three weeks or so, so keep your eyes peeled on

The new Corsa has grown in every direction - its wider and longer wheelbase provides improved leg and shoulder room.

From launch, four familiar engines and one new powerplant will be available. Petrol engines of 1.0, 1.2 and 1.4-litres provide 60, 79, or 89bhp, and diesel buyers get the choice of the excellent 69bhp 1.3-litre or the all-new 123bhp 1.7-litre engines. The 95bhp version of the 1.3-litre is sure to join the range eventually.

A super-hot Corsa VXR is also on the way in 2007. Final details haven't yet confirmed, but we expect it to provide around 200bhp for about £14,000.
