Sporty new additions for the Peugeot 207 supermini range are on the way, with outputs approaching 200bhp.

The first to arrive will be the three-door-only £14,345 207 GT this November. It uses a turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol that develops 150bhp – enough for a 0-62mph time of 8.7sec. Although there are no official top speed figures yet, the GT still returns an impressive 40.3mpg average.

Early next year an even more powerful 207, likely to be called the GTI, will land in showrooms. It will use the same engine as the GT, although Peugeot isn't quoting an exact output yet.

Peugeot certainly won't let Renault runaway with added horsepower in the Clio Renaultsport, however, so we expect the 207 GTI to have close to 200bhp.

The GTI is likely to weigh around the same as the Renault, at about 1200kg, so it could also dip below the 7.0sec mark on the dash to 62mph.

The new 1.6-litre petrol was developed in conjunction with BMW. Less powerful versions will also replace the current, rather disappointing 1.6-litre petrol, from early in 2007.
