Renault Clio Renaultsport 197

Get ready for the hot new Clio Renaultsport 197.

Arriving in the UK this summer, the latest sporty Clio is more powerful than ever, using a development of the previous Clio Renaultsport 182's 2.0-litre engine.

The 197 in its name refers to its 197 ps power output. This converts to 194bhp.

The extra power helps the Renaultsport 197 to take just 6.9sec to reach 62mph. Top speed, however, drops from 139mph to 134mph.

A new six-speed gearbox is fitted which helps the car achieve a combined fuel economy of 31.7mpg, although this is 3.2mpg worse than before.

The rear diffuser found on the concept version of the car is retained for showroom models. In the real world, it's mostly for show, because Renault says it will only provide downforce at 'very high speed'.

Renault has uprated the hot Clio's suspension and sharpened its handling, while the brakes are now more powerful.

Prices are likely to increase a little compared with the £14,800 price tag of its predecessor, but we wouldn't expect the new 197 to cost much more than £15,000.
