Saab to launch 300bhp bioethanol 9-5
- New 9-5 concept runs on 100% ethanol
- 2.0-litre turbo engine produces 300bhp
- Car is good for 0-62mph in 6.6sec
Saab will launch a 9-5 concept car powered exclusively by bioethanol at the Geneva Motor Show next month.
The Saab 9-5 BioPower 100's turbocharged 2.0-litre engine is the first production engine in the world to run on 100% bioethanol. Most cars built to run on such biofuels run on E85, which is a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% petroleum.
Because of modifications to the engine management system and internal components, the engine can generate 300bhp - Saab claims this is the same as a non-turbo 4.0-litre motor.
As well as 300bhp, the car has 295lb ft of pulling power. Together, that's enough to power the car to 62mph in 6.6sec.
Saab already has a production 9-5 BioPower on sale which runs on E85, but it's unlikely the BioPower 100 will ever join it - no-one yet sells 100% ethanol (E100) at filling stations.
