Seven seats likely for longer Seat Altea

27 June 2006

Seat will unveil a larger version of the Altea MPV at the Paris Motor Show at the end of September.

The manufacturer is saying giving nothing else away at the moment, but the mopst likely scenario is that it has developed a seven-seater version of the people carrier.

It's unlikely Seat could squeeze a pair of folding seats into the boot of the current five-seater, so it will either have stretched the wheelbase of the car or extended its rear overhang.

A longer rear overhang is by far the cheaper and more likely option, and is how Renault transformed the five-seater Scenic into the seven-seater Grand Scenic.

An extra pair of seats will give the Altea more of the MPV flexibility it lacks. It will also help it to remain more competitive with the legion of compact seven-seaters, which includes the Grand Scenic, Mazda 5, Toyota Verso and Volkswagen Touran.

Citroen is also due to unveil a seven-seater MPV at the Paris show which will sit between the Picasso five-seater and full-size C8 people-carriers.
