The system is available with the 158bhp 1.8-litre TSI and 256bhp 3.6-litre V6 petrol engines, along with the 168bhp 2.0-litre TDI CR diesel engine.
It shifts torque to the wheels that have most traction – using the ABS sensors as a guide – to give the car maximum grip in slippery conditions.
When all-wheel drive isn't required the system is disengaged, which means fuel consumption isn't as high as it would be with a permanent four-wheel drive system.
Four-wheel drive will also make towing trailers and caravans easier and safer.
Prices start at £22,420 for the 1.8-litre 4x4 model in SE trim. The Superb goes on sale on February 26.
