Whatcar.com's show highlights

24 July 2006

Whatcar.com went under cover to bring you what we reckon are the top highlights of this year's motor show.

If you have been e-mail us your motor show highlights – and send us in your motor show pictures, too. Click here.

In our opinion, the What Car? Diary Room takes top honours, but here are the rest of our favourite:

The stand is good enough, but Mazda has really scored a hit with all the action you can have at its Zoom-Zoom Challenge. Here, you can drive a RX-8 or MX-5 around a purpose-built 300m track. Make sure you bring your driving licence if you want to take part.

Vauxhall's 'yoof' appeal
The main stage behind the Corsa has a half-pipe where skateborders and BMX-ers do 360s, kickflips and so on - all very impressive. If you're flagging by the time you get to Vauxhall, you can pick up a free Corsa energy drink, too.

Exploding cars
Honda's stand has a lot going for it, but its exploded view of a Formula 1 car takes some beating. They also have some of the best freebie bags available – a kind of black vinyl knapsack with a Type R motif.

Boats at BMW
For starters, the stand is outside in the sunshine. Here you can drool over the M6 convertible and hoist the mainsail on BMW's yacht. Mini owners should try and blag their way onto the Mini Barge – a floating bar by the dockside.

Ford play
Ford's stand seemed to be the biggest of the show, so before you start, you might want to grab a glass of Ribena, take a seat on the comfy beanbags and just contemplate what you want to see there.

After you've seen the Focus coupe-cabriolet, S-Max, Galaxy and the 1,000,000th Focus, have a game of table football, take a look at Marcus Gronholm's World Rally Car and take a virtual penalty kick. After a half-time orange, relax with a massage in the Galaxy First Class Lounge. What more could you want?
