Best coupe 2014: BMW 435i M Sport Sport auto
The BMW 435i is another new kid in the coupé neighbourhood, but what a newcomer. Up front is a turbocharged 3.0-litre straight six engine that develops 306bhp and 295lb ft of torque, and puts it down through a six-speed manual gearbox. This hurls the 435i past 62mph in just 5.4 seconds and takes it on to a limited top speed of 155mph. The real eye-opener is the car's overtaking power; once the turbo spins into action the 435i feels like it makes the jump to light speed.
It deals with bumpy B-roads easily enough but its true forte is the long motorway slog because you can let it shuffle into top gear and simply rely on the engine's torque to waft you along.
There's plenty of space for four people in the cabin and the boot will be able to carry most of their stuff. That cabin is beautiful, too; it uses quality materials and feels fantastically well put together – the 435i is a car you'll be happy to get into and reluctant to get out of.
