Best family car 2014: Skoda Octavia 1.2 TSI SE
Since launch, Skoda's Octavia has been a byword for pragmatic family transport, but the latest version offers a lot more than affordable, agreeable motoring.
The Octavia costs less to run than most rivals – whether you're a private buyer or a company car driver. There is nothing cheap about the interior however, and equipment is generous. We favour SE trim, which gets alloys, Bluetooth, DAB, rear parking sensors and climate control.
It's also the biggest car in its class, with a huge 590-litre boot, and rear space that rivals plenty of cars from the class above. Drivers of all sizes will get comfy behind the wheel, thanks to generous seat and steering wheel adjustment, while six-footers can lounge comfortably in the rear, too.
Although the 1.2-litre petrol engine is the entry-level motor, it is easily up to the job, pulling cleanly from 1400rpm and being far more hushed than the pricier diesel models in the range.
