Best green car 2014: BMW i3 Electric
The BMW i3 brings more than just a premium offering to the mainstream electric car scene. It offers almost the most fun you'll have in an electric car. Many buyers will be tempted by the range-extender version, which gets a petrol engine that takes over when the batteries run flat. We'd choose the cheaper pure electric model, which has a slightly better range of 80-100 miles.
A high-set driving position, narrow body, good visibility and tiny turning circle make it an ideal town car, and a range of eclectic materials, including eucalyptus wood, give it a quirky but classy finish. It's only slightly bigger than a Fiesta, and only two can sit in the back, but the rear-hinged back doors leave a pillarless opening for easy access, and there's enough space for adults.
While the ride is firm, it's easy to forgive thanks to the hot-hatch pace and handling. The i3 is expensive, but you still feel like you're getting a lot for your money.
