Suzuki Swift 1.6 Sport
The Suzuki Swift Sport’s rev-happy engine and sharp handling make it a great hot hatch.
Don’t expect blistering performance, but work the six short gear ratios and it’s a rewarding car to drive right to its limits. The engine revs smoothly past 4000rpm, and sounds good when you do.
What will delight most, though, is the way the Swift demolishes a B-road; it turns, grips and generally scampers its way along the road, giving you confidence and loads of grins.
Uprated suspension means the Swift Sport has the firmest ride in the range, but it’s still remarkably comfortable by hot hatch standards. If you want lashings of racy trim, look elsewhere.
The Swift Sport is all about understatement and value. Climate control, keyless entry and start, cruise control and xenon headlights are standard, and all in a car that you can get for £13,000.
If you need more practicality, the new five-door version costs another £500.
