The Alhambra has been a favourite at this price point for several years, and it's easy to see why. Even with all seven seats in place its boot is a respectable size, while the roomy rear two seats are easy to reach via the sliding rear doors and tilting middle row. There's also masses of room for the front five occupants, while all five rear seats fold flat into the floor to create a vast load space.
The suspension does a great job of dealing with bumps, yet it manages to keep things on an even keel through the bends - essential if your small ones are prone to travel sickness.
The 2.0-litre diesel engine is a trusty workhorse; it might not be able to compete with the best modern equivalents on economy and emissions, but it's still good and suitably punchy.
Our favourite S trim gives you front and rear parking sensors, climate control, alloys and auto lights and wipers as standard, while the Alhambra has five Euro NCAP stars out of five for safety.
