Move north of the £22,000 mark and there are several premium-badged models to choose from, but none matches the ability of the Audi Q3.
This mixes sharp steering and composed handling with a comfortable ride, while its 138bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine is smooth and punchy. The dashboard is as plush as you'd expect an Audi's to be, too, with well-damped switches and knobs, a user-friendly layout and tactile, premium-feeling materials in all the key areas.
What's more, there's no need to go beyond the entry-level SE trim, because this gives you a colour screen, Bluetooth, dual-zone climate control, rear parking sensors, and a DAB radio.
On the downside you don't get any more space than you do in the average family hatchback, and running costs are higher than they are for cars such as the Qashqai, but the Q3 is still a reasonably sensible choice. It fully deserves its spot as our top-priced small SUV.
