Best sports car 2014: Porsche Boxster 2.7
The latest-generation Boxster might cost only half as much as its bigger brother, the 911, but you aren't getting only half the fun.
In fact, we'd opt for the entry-level 2.7-litre flat-six model. It's a mighty engine, with enough pull to make you doubt the 5.8sec 0-62mph time, and the light but precise gearchange means you're always ready to make the most of that power.
The Boxster's handling is no less impressive. There's not only a massive amount of grip at the rear tyres and plenty of bite at the front, but the body also remains brilliantly flat, allowing you to carry huge speed through corners.
When you just want to get where you're going, there's a beautifully finished cabin to enjoy and enough space for two people to stay comfortable on a long journey. It's a quiet cabin with the fabric roof in place, and you aren't buffeted about by the wind with the roof down - as long as you choose the optional wind deflector.
