FOR THE SECOND year on the trot, Skoda’s cavernous Fabia Estate has proved the best estate car at this price point. The standard Fabia hatchback is already spacious, but as an estate it builds on that further, providing a truly massive but also very practical boot for a keen price.

We think the 89bhp version of the 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine is the best choice, because it keeps the Fabia’s price sensible yet still provides a hushed interior, stout performance and low running costs. It also complements the Fabia’s precise, secure handling, and so is capable of putting a smile on your face on your way to the rubbish tip.

SE trim gets you everything you’ll need: 15in alloy wheels, air-con, rear parking sensors, automatic emergency braking (AEB) and a 6.5in touchscreen infotainment system that has Bluetooth, a USB port and Apple CarPlay.

If you add any options, we would recommend the variable boot floor (£110), which gives a flat surface when the rear seats are folded down.

In this price range, there’s no rival that comes even close to the Fabia Estate.
