It's difficult to look beyond the Volkswagen Scirocco for reasonably priced thrills. It's fast and fun, with a superb chassis and lusty power delivery.
It's a pretty accomplished long-legged cruiser, too, and with a price of just £21,450, it's an absolute bargain.
The small 1.4-litre engine raises a question mark over performance, but it's turbocharged as well as supercharged, and produces 158bhp - plenty enough for a 0-62mph time of eight seconds flat.
The chassis manages to blend sharp handling with a good degree of suppleness, which not only enhances comfort but eliminates skittishness. It allows the car to flow through corners, simply ignoring ruts and bumps as it goes.
However, driving enjoyment is only part of the appeal. Inside, the driver and front passenger are treated to snug-fitting seats, while the small, flat-bottomed steering wheel and the aluminium pedals complete the sporting theme.
Excellent build quality, comprehensive safety kit, plenty of creature comforts and decent space for four make the Scirocco unbeatable at this price.
