The Megane Renaultsport Cup has been our favourite top-priced hot hatch for the past three years.

For a start, this updated model blends coupe-like good looks with muscular haunches and a purposeful stance. Press the accelerator pedal and you'll immediately realise it has the explosive performance to back up that styling. The uprated engine now produces 261bhp, and a limited-slip differential and stiffened suspension mean that none of that power goes to waste.

Body control, balance and grip are fantastic, while excellent steering feel means you can drive the Megane hard in total confidence.

It isn't all about blistering speed, though. The firm suspension has just enough compliance for everyday comfort, while engine and wind noise fade into the background on the motorway. The low roofline limits rear-seat space, but there's a big boot and the cabin feels well made.

Nothing gets close to the Megane Renaultsport Cup if you're after hardcore hot hatch thrills.
