The new 911 might have same-again looks, but what lies beneath makes this latest model a much more rounded, much more 21st-century performance car - and our best sports car of 2012.

Hanging out at the back is a 3.8-litre flat-six engine that develops 394bhp and 325lb ft of torque. You can have it with the world's first seven-speed manual gearbox, but we'd spend the extra £2387 on Porsche's semi-auto PDK transmission.

As you'd expect, the new 911 can get a good shift on; it sprints to 62mph in just 4.3 seconds and will carry on to 187mph. Corners are dealt with better than ever, too, the new car hanging on strongly through fast, sweeping corners, and changing direction quickly though tighter twists.

The new electric power steering isn't as communicative as the old 911's, but nonetheless you're able to trust it after only a short time.

No longer does the 911 assault your ears with road noise; the new car has got rid of it almost entirely. It rides well, too, while the Panamera-inspired interior is a joy to sit in.
