Catalytic converter - Transforms harmful exhaust gases into less harmful or completely benign ones. It turns carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons into water, and nitrogen oxide into nitrogen and oxygen. The chemicals used in a catalytic converter contain precious metals, hence the high cost of replacements. There is sometimes a sulphurous smell when a catalytic converter is warming through. This is normal and nothing to worry about.
