Private sale - Buying a car privately (from a member of the public rather than a member of the motor trade) should mean a cheaper price. However, you won't have the same level of legal protection should you wind up with a duffer on your drive.

If you are selling, you could make more money than if you part-exchange, but remember to leave room in the asking price for negotiation.
