S - Synchromesh

Synchromesh - Before the introduction of synchromesh technology in the 1950s, many gearboxes needed drivers to apply the clutch twice before the next gear could be selected. Synchromesh matches the teeth on cogs in the gearbox so that gears can be changed without this need to double-declutch.
