New for Audi is the A1 Sportback, which promises to add a touch of practicality to the new supermini. These are the first official pictures released by Audi which show the extra set of doors that add just 25kg to the overall weight. The design team has managed to integrate the rear doors so well that Audi has decided to give the new Sport back its own unique colour scheme, even the roof comes with a choice of three contrasting shades.
The Audi A1 Hatchback and Sportback share the same length and wheelbase measurements but the new A1 Sportback is wider and taller than the Hatchback, which will free up space for rear passengers but the boot remains the same size at 270 litres.
Drivers will have a choice of four turbocharged engines which currently feature in the three door version, this includes the ultra efficient 1.6-litre TDI engine unit that can achieve 74.3mpg while only emitting 99g/km. A 2.0 litre diesel engine that produces 141bhp and achieves 0-62mph in a time of just 8.5 seconds will also be available soon after launch in February. A range of trims will also be available but even the standard model will come well equipped with alloy wheels and a 6.5-inch colour display screen as.
The Sportback will cost £560 more than the current 3 door hatchback which means prices will start at £13,980 and rise to £21,270 for the 1.4 TFSI S line trim. Audi also have plans to release an Audi S1, Audi A1 cabriolet and what is surely going to be a true Hot Hatch an Audi RS1.
