It is the first time the Coupe and Saloon versions have been given individual model names, with another new feature coming in the form of a turbocharged engine in each.
The 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, has been developed especially for the models. They can produce 431hp and a peak torque of 550Nm, helping to deliver a 0-62mph time of just 4.3 seconds in both cars.
With the driver's foot to the floor, both the M3 and the M4 can reach the dizzying speeds of 155mph.
The car has had weight limited by 80kg, when compared to previous incarnation of the M3, while designers have paid close attention to the aerodynamics, both to improve performance and to reduce the effects of drag on fuel efficiency.
While the exterior is quintessentially BMW, the interior also features the manufacturer's signatures throughout, from the steering wheel to the gearstick.
