The next generation of Ford Focus' will be put on an extreme diet. Decisions have been made to work on decreasing 200kg, the equivalent of an average sized family - to make the vehicle weigh in at close to 1,100kg.
To achieve this, Ford is looking to make the brand new models almost completely out of aluminium alloy, replacing the current steel. Andrew Fraser, the director of Powertrain stated as Ford has to meet the EU target of 95g/km CO2 average over the range by 2020, 200kg will have to be removed from the car.
The much lighter Ford Focus is likely to be available from 2018.
