The new Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG is the most powerful and lightweight it's ever been, and while it's not on sale in the UK until the end of the year – after a public debut at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September – the performance statistics are already impressing.
Under the expansive bonnet is an AMG, 5.5-litre, V8 biturbo petrol engine that produces some 585bhp and a thumping 900Nm of torque. However, thanks to many modifications and the brand's famous BlueDIRECT economy tuning, this mighty V8 is more economical than ever.
Indeed, the new car's fuel consumption is lower than that of the model it replaces, even though the motor is a noticeable 41bhp more powerful. Its economy figures of 27.9mpg combined and 237g/km of CO2 are almost unbelievable considering the thrust this car has at its disposal.
Acceleration is quoted a 4.4 seconds to 62mph, while the top speed is limited to 155mph. This greater economy and performance is helped along by a marked reduction in weight, down to around 2,000kg for the standard wheel-base length model.
The new Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG is more boldly styled than ever, and inside it's the usual case of leather everywhere, plenty of electronic comfort and driver aids, and the very latest in Mercedes safety equipment for the top of the range super-cruiser. Pricing has yet to be confirmed.
