Audi is set to launch new entry-level versions of its A8 luxury car and a storming S4 Cabriolet.
New 3.0-litre diesel and petrol engines join the A8 range next March. Unlike the rest of the range, which have four-wheel drive, the new models are front-wheel drive. They should cost from around £45,000: £6000 less than the current entry-level 3.7-litre model.
The new 230bhp 3.0 diesel version sprints to 62mph in 7.8sec, has a top speed of 151mph and returns 31.4mpg on the combined cycle. The engine complies with strict Euro IV emissions regulations, which means it avoids the usual 3% company car tax penalty for diesel cars, although its total emissions have yet to be confirmed.
A continuously variable transmission which offers seamless gearchanges is fitted to the new 217bhp 3.0 petrol A8. The car has a 0-62mph time of 7.9sec, a top speed of 150mph and combined fuel consumption of 29.4mpg.
Long-wheelbase A8 models are expected to arrive at the same time and offer 130mm more rear legroom. Audi is likely to charge a premium of around £3000-£4000 for the stretched versions.
Audi is also launching a new performance version of its A4 drop-top. The four-wheel-drive S4 Cabriolet goes on sale next spring and is likely to cost about £40,000. The 344bhp S4 offers a top speed of 155mph, a 0-62mph time of 5.9sec and combined fuel consumption of 20.5mpg.
