Big brother to Grand Cherokee

Jeep is preparing to expand its family of models with a big new 4x4.

The new arrival is likely to be a seven-seater and bigger than the Grand Cherokee.

The company has only said it will make an announcement on the future of the model in the next 12 months, so production versions of the car are unlikely to surface for some time.

Meanwhile, the all-new Grand Cherokee arrives next year to take the fight to the Land Rover Discovery, and the face-lifted Cherokee unveiled at the Paris Motor Show will compete at the smaller Land Rover Freelander-sized end of the market.

Although the new Grand Cherokee is already on sale in the US, buyers in the UK will have to wait until the middle of next year to see the car in showrooms. The manufacturer is readying new production lines for the car in Austria, which accounts for the delays.

No prices have yet been announced for the new Grand Cherokee, but it will come with a 3.7 V6 petrol engine, from the existing Cherokee, and a new 5.7 V8 unit from the Chrysler 300C. A diesel engine will be available but Jeep is yet to confirm its size.
