The 535d uses a pair of turbochargers to boost the output of the 3.0-litre engine found in the £32,225 530d by 54bhp to 272bhp. It also develops 413lb ft of pulling power, 44lb ft more than the 530d.
The extra power helps the 535d reach 60mph in 6.5sec, 1.8sec faster than the 530d. Top speed is limited to 155mph. Its average fuel consumption is 5.6mpg worse than the 530d’s at 35.3mpg. CO2 emissions have yet to be announced.
BMW has also announced prices for its new entry-level 6-series coupe and convertible, which also arrive in October.
The 258bhp 3.0-litre petrol models cost £45,255 in coupe form and £50,655 as a convertible – more than £5000 less than the 329bhp 645i models.
The new models are around a second slower on the sprint to 60mph with a time of 6.5sec for the coupe and 6.9sec for the drop-top. Average fuel consumption is 31.4mpg for the coupe and 29.4mpg for the convertible, as much as 6.8mpg better than the 645i. Both slot into the 35% company car tax band.
