Mitsubishi will put a convertible version of its new Colt supermini into production in 2006.
Mitsubishi will put a convertible version of its new Colt supermini into production in 2006.
The new model will rival the Peugeot 206 CC with its two-plus-two seat layout, folding metal roof and a likely entry-level price of around £14,500.
Pictures of the car will not be released until January 2005, ahead of its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
The earlier CZ2 cabriolet concept shown at the Geneva Motor Show in 2003 gives some clear clues on how the new Colt convertible will look. This concept was a soft-top, however, which allowed enough space for four seats rather than the production version’s two-plus-two design.
The Colt convertible will be narrowly beaten onto UK roads by the Nissan Micra C+C, which arrives late next year. Like the Colt and 206, it has a metal folding roof and two-plus-two seating.
Mazda is also on the verge of launching new versions of the MX-5 roadster. Soft-top versions arrive late next year and folding metal roof designs are expected in the spring of 2006.
The Colt convertible will be built by specialist manufacturer Pininfarina in Turin. Pininfarina already builds the Ford Streetka soft-top and will also build a Focus-based, steel-roofed coupe convertible from 2006.
Vauxhall and Volkswagen are also preparing metal-roofed convertibles based on the new Astra and Golf, which are also expected to arrive in 2006.
