Crackdown on car clamping delayed

A crackdown on cowboy car clampers has been delayed.

The Security Industry Authority is attempting to postpone a licensing scheme, which will make it a criminal offence to clamp a car on private land without a licence.

The hold-up is a result of a problem with the issuing of the licences, as many clampers would not be covered in time for the March 28 deadline.

Rogue clampers have in the past been accused of deliberately setting traps and mis-leading motorists in order to collect release fees for immobilised cars.

Edmund King, executive director of the RAC Foundation, which has been campaigning for regulations, said: ‘It seems ridiculous that this licensing scheme should be delayed when the bill was passed four years ago. Clamping should be outlawed as it has been in Scotland since 1992.’
