Peugeot is recalling nearly 21,000 406s following a number of under-bonnet fires.
The manufacturer wants to check 20,997 cars built between December 2001 and the end of March this year.
The manufacturer has traced the problem to the engine cooling fan, which can malfunction if damaged by water.
Initially, owners complained that fans were failing to switch off, even after cars were left parked all day. Then daily rental companies reported fires, although Peugeot said their policy of pressure-washing cars at least once a day had increased the likelihood of the fault occurring.
The car maker is now in the process of contacting all registered owners with the offer of a free inspection and remedial work. Concerned owners can call 01189 458484 for more information.
