Although the new car looks less boxy than the current Passat Estate, luggage space is improved. With the back seats folded away there is a 1731-litre load space available – that is 131 litres more than the old car. Even with the seats up there are 603 litres, an improvement of 108 litres.
Buyers will have a choice of four petrol engines, ranging from a 113bhp 1.6-litre up to 247bhp 3.2-litre V6. Two diesel engines will be available initially, a 104bhp 1.9-litre and a 138bhp 2.0-litre. A 168bhp 2.0-litre diesel will join the range a few months later.
Diesel buyers will have the option of Volkswagen’s twin-clutch Direct Shift Gearbox, which allows drivers the choice of fully automatic or semi-automatic modes. A conventional six-speed automatic ’box will be available with the 1.6- and 2.0-litre petrol models.
Prices, performance and economy figures have yet to be announced, but expect to pay from around £16,000. That is a premium of around £1000 over the Passat saloon.
