The new Ford Focus will cost from £10,895 to £18,525 when it goes on sale next January. That makes the new Focus £1100 less than the most basic VW Golf.

While the entry-level 79bhp 1.4-litre petrol in Studio trim may be cheaper and a little better equipped than existing CLs, most other models in the range increase in price slightly.

The familiar LX, Zetec and Ghia specifications continue from the existing range but are now joined by Sport and range-topping Titanium options.

Five-door models are £600 more expensive than three-doors, while estate versions will set buyers back another £850.

Base Studio models are fitted with anti-lock brakes, central locking, six airbags, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, front electric windows and an alarm. No Studio diesels models are planned.

LX cars cost from £11,945 for the 1.4-litre petrol three-door and add curtain airbags, air conditioning, power heated mirrors, remote central locking and CD stereo with steering wheel mounted controls. Diesel versions cost from £14,345 for the 108bhp 1.6-litre as a five-door, £1050 more than equivalent petrol models.

Sport is the next step up with front fog lamps, alloy wheels and a leather steering wheel. Buyers will pay from £12,220 for a 1.4-litre petrol three-door or £14,620 for a five-door 108bhp diesel.

Zetec cars start with the three-door 99bhp 1.6-litre petrol for £13,095 without air-conditioning or £13,695 with chilled air. A more powerful 143bhp 2.0-litre petrol three-door is available for £14,195, while the 108bhp diesel is priced from £14,395. As well as their sportier suspension Zetecs boast body-coloured mirrors, larger 16-inch alloys and a trip computer.

Ghias pack in cruise control, rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlights, with prices kicking off at £14,670 for a 99bhp 1.6-litre petrol five-door or £15,970 for the 108bhp diesel. The 2.0-litre petrol is on hand for £15,770, while a 133bhp diesel is yours from £16,770. No three-door Ghias are available.

Titanium tops out the range and adds part-leather sports seats, 17-inch alloys and a single slot CD player with MP3 decoding. Prices start at £14,925 for a three-door using the 113bhp 1.6-litre petrol.
