Ford has slashed up to £995 off the list prices of its Mondeo family car range and added a new entry-level diesel option.

Every model has been reduced in price, while a new 89bhp diesel joins the range. The top-rated 153bhp 2.2-litre diesel, which now meets the Euro IV emissions standard, is also now available in Zetec trim. Good-value Silver special editions also continue.

Our industry sources reckon buyers should easily be able to get another 5% off any of the the new, lower list prices from dealers.

• New 2.0-litre 89bhp diesel is available in LX trim only from £16,300.

• The 2.0-litre 128bhp diesel engine is cut in price by £995, so the premium over an equivalent petrol now stands at £1000. Prices start at £18,300 for a Zetec saloon or hatchback.

• Entry-level LX-trimmed cars are cut in price by £195 and now cost from £15,800 for a 124bhp 1.8-litre petrol four-door saloon or five-door hatchback.

• The availability of the Silver special edition has been extended. Priced from £15,680 for a 124bhp petrol or £16,585 for the 114bhp diesel, the cars undercut an LX but also include alloy wheels, metallic paint and an electrically heated front windscreen.

• Zetec models drop in price by £600 and now cost from £16,800 for a saloon or hatchback. Sports suspension is now a £150 option, however.

• Prices fall £400 on both Ghia and Titanium models. The cheapest 143bhp petrol-engined cars now start at £18,300.

• Ghia X and Titanium X models drop £200. List prices now start at £20,300 for the cheapest 143bhp cars.
