A front-wheel-drive Hyundai Tucson off-roader is now available and costs £1000 less than the four-wheel-drive version.

The petrol-powered GSi costs £13,995. It uses the same 139bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine as the four-wheel-drive version but is faster and more economical thanks to its lighter weight and more efficient transmission.

Its 0-60mph sprint time drops by almost a second to 10.4sec, its top speed is extended by 4mph to 112mph, and its fuel economy improves 0.9mpg on the combined cycle to 35.3mpg.

Both versions are in the 25% company car tax band for 2005/2006 despite the front-wheel-drive off-roader’s lower emissions. However, its lower list price helps to cut tax bills. A lower-rate company driver will pay £55 less a year at £759.

Its equipment is identical to that of the four-wheel-drive Tucson GSi and includes remote central locking, alloy wheels, air-conditioning, electric mirrors and windows, front and side airbags, and a CD player.

Hyundai said it has no plans to introduce a front-wheel-drive version of the 111bhp 2.0-litre diesel Tucson.
