High-tech future for Fiat

Fiat has joined forces with software giant Microsoft to develop new high-tech systems such as voice-activated controls for its cars.

Other developments will include on-the-move internet access and better integration of phones and laptops into the cars’ systems. This should provide safer hands-free operation of mobiles while driving.
The new systems are likely to be introduced on forthcoming models from Fiat and Alfa , possibly starting with the new Fiat Punto, Fiat family car and Alfa 157 set to arrive in 2005.
Fiat claims the venture with Microsoft is the first time a car manufacturer has worked hand-in-hand with a software company. It says the partnership will develop high-quality systems that will be up to 70% cheaper Fiat’s existing Connect services.
Connect provides Fiat and Alfa owners with a one-touch link to a call centre which offers a range of services, from weather and traffic reports to hotel booking and turn-by-turn route guidance.
