Volvo’s 400bhp S60 R performance saloon and V70 R estate go on sale early this summer, costing from £34,145 for the saloon and £37,760 for the estate.
Both models use a 2.5-litre turbo engine and have 57bhp more than BMW’s M3 – but they can’t match its speed. The S60 R hits 60mph in 5.7sec and the V70 R in 5.9sec, while the M3 manages the sprint in just 4.8sec.
The all-wheel drive models have a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, although Volvo’s automatic Geartronic ’box with manual override is available for a £1250 premium.
Combined fuel economy is 26.4mpg for the saloon and 25.9mpg for the estate. Both cars fall into the maximum 35% band for company car tax liability.
Specification will be generous, including leather upholstery, climate control, traction control and anti-lock brakes.
