Hyundai will join the small 4x4 market with the launch of its new Tucson on August 14, with prices starting at £14,995.

Slotting into the range below the existing Terracan and Santa Fe off-roaders, Hyundai is pitching the new five-door arrival against the likes of the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V and Subaru Forester.

In all there are seven models in the range with a choice of three engines and two trim levels.

Entry-level GSI models are fitted with anti-lock brakes, power steering, traction control, six airbags, electronic brakeforce distribution, a sunroof, air-conditioning and alloy wheels.

Moving up to CDX specification costs £1200 and adds climate control, leather upholstery, cruise control, heated front seats and heated door mirrors.

The 140bhp 2.0 petrol unit forms the starting point with a 173bhp 2.7 V6 petrol also available priced from £18,695 in CDX trim. The 2.0 is available only as a manual, while the 2.7 comes with an automatic gearbox as standard.

Acceleration to 60mph in the 2.0 takes 11.3sec and top speed is 108mph. It returns 34.4mpg on the combined cycle and sits in the 24% company car tax band.

The 2.7 V6 makes 60mph in 10.5sec and has a top speed of 112mph. Fuel economy is 28.2mpg on the combined cycle, while high CO2 emissions put it into the 33% tax bracket.

Diesel buyers can choose a 111bhp 2.0-litre engine, which costs from £15,995 in GSI guise. Returning 39.8mpg, the engine earns a place in the 26% tax band until early next year when Hyundai says it will meet Euro IV emissions standards, so avoiding the usual 3% tax penalty and dropping down into the 23% band.

The 0-60mph time is 13.8sec and top speed is put at 104mph. An automatic gearbox is available for £1000.
