Kia is undercutting small family car rivals with new diesel-engined versions of its Cerato hatchback and saloon.

The 100bhp 1.5-litre CRDi costs from £10,245 – £2450 less than a 91bhp Citroen C4 1.6 HDi and £4100 less than a 90bhp Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi.

Equipment levels are high. The entry-level GS five-door hatchback comes with six airbags, air-conditioning, a CD player that can play MP3 files, remote central locking, front and rear electric windows and electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors.

Another £750 buys an LX, hatchback or saloon, which includes alloy wheels, front foglights and body-coloured side mouldings.
